Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes and has been known in many cultures throughout the world for thousands of years. These essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants, diluted, and blended into sprays, powders, and lotions, and are used to help treat or relieve a variety of mental, emotional and physical ailments and medical conditions.
The oils and their scents can be very beneficial. A number of essential oils have been demonstrated to be anti-bacterial and anti-viral; other oils and scents can have a very emotionally calming effect. Some oils are used to increase the appetite or enhance the ability to sleep well and some are said to be especially effective in calming anxiety.
