Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center

Five New Trustees Elected at Annual Meeting

Five new board members were elected at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center’s annual meeting Nov. 17, during a session at which change was a prominent theme. New CEO Kevin Donovan was keynote speaker. He said the hospital has begun planning for changes that will come as the healthcare environment undergoes major shifts. The political climate makes forecasts difficult, Donovan acknowledged, but he said Mt. Ascutney Hospital will seek to improve quality and services, and expand where it’s beneficial for patients and the hospital. He presented survey results that show high patient satisfaction at the hospital, which scored better than state and national averages in many areas.

Donovan said preliminary work has begun on a new strategic plan that will guide the hospital in the next three to five years. There are challenges ahead, he said, along with “opportunities to improve services and performance.’’ Three physicians are among the new board members. Dr. Beach Conger, a longtime internist at Mt. Ascutney Hospital, is also known as the author of two books that took both a light-hearted and serious look at the medical profession. Dr. Richard Meyer is medical director of the hospital’s Emergency Department, and Dr. Steven Smith is an internist at Woodstock’s Ottauquechee Health Center, which is managed by Mt. Ascutney Hospital. Also elected to the board were Donna Van Fleet, a retired IBM executive from Brownsville who is involved in numerous community nonprofits, and Nancy Formella, MSN, RN, co-president of Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

Hospital incorporators approved by-law changes that increased the number of incorporators from 125 to 150, and reflect the fact that Donovan works under a management services agreement and technically is an employee of Dartmouth-Hitchcock. He emphasized, “I am fully answerable to the board and incorporators of Mt. Ascutney Hospital.’’

Donovan joined Mt. Ascutney Hospital in September. Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations at Elliot Health System in Manchester, NH. Nancy Loux, president of Mt. Ascutney Hospital’s Board of Trustees, said she is already introducing him as “our CEO, not our new CEO.’’
