Occupational Therapy

The Outpatient Occupational Therapy (OT) department sees patients who have experienced neurological problems such as stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, Multiple Sclerosis, and others.

Once a physician referral is received, an Occupational Therapist will evaluate and develop a treatment plan in conjunction with you and your family.

Some areas addressed by OT include activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, home management) UE function, functional mobility, cognitive and visual impairments, and kitchen safety assessments.

Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center is a Bioness-trained facility. Bioness (Ness H200) is an advanced therapy system designed to use mild electrical stimulation to improve the way your arm works or to decrease muscle spasms. With a physician referral, we offer a trial of the H200, upper extremity orthosis to determine if this is appropriate for you.

Our treatments may incorporate the following specialized services and techniques:

  • Bioness Upper Extremity Electrical Stimulation Orthotic uses mild electrical stimulation with an orthotic to decrease muscle spasms and improve upper extremity limb function.
  • Bioness Vector Gait and Safety System is a ceiling-mounted technology that supports a patient’s weight to enable walking; ideal for those recovering from a stroke and spinal cord injury, amputation or orthopedic injury, or from surgery to the hip and lower extremities.
  • Hand Therapy offers assessment, planning, and treatment of therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction or restore the function of the upper limb, including the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle.
  • Dynavision Screening, originally designed as a device to improve the visuomotor skills of athletes, may be used for patients whose visual and/or motor function has been compromised by injury or disease.
