Neurology

Neurology is a medical discipline that focuses on abnormalities in a patient's nervous system. Neurologists diagnose and treat conditions and diseases involving the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).

Think of the CNS as the command center for the body, consisting of the brain and spinal column. The PNS consists of a network of nerves that connect the rest of the body to the central nervous system.

People who are experiencing issues with their senses of touch, vision, or smell may need to consult with a neurologist. These problems are often caused by disorders in the nervous system, and can present as trouble with movement, breathing, speaking, swallowing or even learning.

Symptoms that may signal the need for treatment by a neurologist include the following:

  • Chronic or severe headaches
  • Chronic neuropathic pain
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Movement problems
  • Memory problems or confusion

Some chronic conditions that can be treated by a neurologist include:

  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Migraines
  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Encephalitis
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)
  • MS or Multiple Sclerosis
  • Alzheimer's Disease
  • Meningitis
  • Neurological complications from HIV

A neurologist is trained to diagnose and treat neurological disorders. When you meet with a neurologist, they will ask you about your health history and perform a neurological exam. A neurological exam assesses the function of cranial nerves, coordination, mental status, sensation, muscle strength and reflexes.

At Mt. Ascutney Hospital, our neurology team will work closely with our patient care and acute rehabilitation teams to diagnose and treat complex disorders of the brain, spinal cord, muscles, and nervous system.

Our team will use diagnostic testing to help identify any problems. We will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan so that you receive the best possible care.

Some diagnostic tests used by our team may include:

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Magnetic Resonance Angiogram (MRA)
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Electromyogram / nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCS)
